This is to replace the mysteriously unimploded politics thread, which exists for everyone but the server, it would seem.
Please pick up any unfinished threads from there and plant them here as you wish.
Or not, as the case may be.
2069 posts to go.

Ed, your question to me will be answered when I have some time - in the Religion thread because that's where it really belongs. This thread is only for politics, and some diversions, but religion
I just got home from the World Open in Philadelphia. Evgeny Najer won the playoff against Negi for the trophy and an extra $100. The rest of the money get split. Tied for first were Ftacnik, Moiseenkom & Smirin. I think that was the lot. I didn't stay to the bitter end.
Happily I got to meet two people I have corresponded with and never seen in person. One is Jon Jacobs, who often write on Mig's Dirt. The other is Alejandro Ramirez, from Costa Rica, but now at the University of Texas in Dallas (the Pan Am team champs. He is very nice and much much much better looking than any picture I've seen of him. My camera worked long enough to take one picture, and I hope that will be appearing in a lot of places soon. He should have won some money. Also winning money will be Alejandro, Sergey Ehrenburg and 19 year old IM Alex Lenderman. When I asked Alex at the start of the last round if he would get a GM norm, he said "I don't care about norms, I may win some money." I'm so glad he did.

inky, I think you can answer it here, as the question (and answer) leads to the issue of personal responsibility, which in turn affects all political questions.
Take your time. It's not like either of us is going anywhere. And if we were going elsewhere, who would care?
How big was the turn out at the World?

Chess Fan Hmmm, so it appears that "conservative" is used to mean those folks who are religious fundamentalists and oppose science.

Iraq. As the New York Times reported Deals With Iraq Are Set to Bring Oil Giants Back . Four Western oil companies are in the final stages of negotiations this month on contracts that will return them to Iraq, 36 years after losing their oil concession to nationalization as Saddam Hussein rose to power. Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total and BP — the original partners in the Iraq Petroleum Company — along with Chevron and a number of smaller oil companies, are in talks with Iraq’s Oil Ministry for no-bid contracts to service Iraq’s largest fields. (-)
There was suspicion among many in the Arab world and among parts of the American public that the United States had gone to war in Iraq precisely to secure the oil wealth these contracts seek to extract. The Bush administration has said that the war was necessary to combat terrorism. It is not clear what role the United States played in awarding the contracts; there are still American advisers to Iraq’s Oil Ministry. Of course many groupings in Iraq are strongly opposed to this, which may have pressured Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to give this suprising announcement: Yahoo News Iraq demands pullout timetable in US defence pact talks . Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Monday he is negotiating a deal with Washington that will for the first time set a timetable for a withdrawal of foreign forces as part of a framework for a US troop presence into next year. I believe there is a connection between who is military controlling the country, and which oil companies are getting no-bid contracts. Anyway, this stand by Maliki should please Obama more than McCain.

I wouldn't necessarily equate opposition to stem cell research with opposition to science, but it does seem that they're talking about social conservatives here rather than economic ones. But wasn't there a story a few months back about breakthroughs in stem cell research making it possible to do the same work without destroying embryos? I don't remember the details, but I'm sure there was a big story along those lines a few months back.

Liposuctioned fat is a good source of stem cells. Fat rich people can suck out the cellulite, then extract and reinject the stem cells to aid in healing and general prolongation of life. There's a Ted Talk about stem cells that's well worth watching. Actually, I recommend the Ted Talks to anyone with an interest in scientific or technological innovation. Maybe I'll be able to post some links later.

I knew there would be an upside to being overweight! Yeah, post some links, that would be cool. Maybe we should start a new thread for science discussions.

I thought there was more than objections to stem cell research. But the original link doesn't work anymore so I can't say for sure. But they definitely are talking about social conservatives as "conservatives" which somehow bothers the fiscal conservative in me.
