His wording was unfortunate, but he was on to something. Obama had said everyone should go to college, and reacted to that. Once again American politics degenerates into the pseudo-intellectual against the anti-intellectual.

Does it matter? The end result is the same.

Boy, CNN is really crying the blues over Dick Lugar's defeat last night. It's not often you see them this upset over a Republican losing.

Big news. Obama has reversed himself on which stance he needs to take to get more votes and/or donations! President Backs Gay Mariage I'm not a professional pollster, so I'm going to assume he's right on this.

I think this is very courageous (and correct!) of Obama - presumably he's going to get severely attacked for this 'assault on the family' or something like that. Picking up the point about pollsters, I wonder why Obama has decided to go public on this. Is it because he thinks it will help him win in November, or does he genuinely feel it's the right thing to do? Some of both, I should think, but I wonder how much of each...
PS - I know Joe Biden's comments at the weekend sort of bounced Obama into saying something, but Obama didn't have to come out (as it were) so unequivocally in favour of equal marriage rights for same-gender couples, did he?

More on Obama endorsing gay marriage - I've just read this rather interesting comment on a political blog:
'I met up with a friend of mine in Boston last night who is working with the Obama team in Chicago. I asked him about this and he said that one of the points in doing it was to get a response from Romney. Everyone basically knew that Obama supported gay marriage, even if he had not said it, but in making a public statement Obama would force Romney to make one too and it would have to be in opposition (which it was), so placing him to the right.
Romney's aim is to start moving more to the centre. Obama wants to stop him doing this as much as possible. There wil be more of these kind of "personal statements" from the President.'

I think this is very courageous (and correct!) of Obama "Correct", I don't know. But "courageous" I have to disagree with. To wait until the day AFTER a major election on this same issue, watch it go down to defeat while you don't lift a finger to help, and then announce "Oh, by the way, I was on your side, I just didn't want to risk endorsing a possible losing side", comes off as positively cowardly. Courageous is where you do what you think is right even though it may hurt you. I think we can be sure he hopes to benefit from this announcement, not suffer. It may not work that way, but if he were courageous, he would have lent his support in the North Carolina case. I wonder why Obama has decided to go public on this. Conventional wisdom is that 1 in 6 of his big backers are gay, they're not coming across with much money this year, and he's hoping to open their wallets a bit. but Obama didn't have to come out (as it were) so unequivocally in favour of equal marriage rights for same-gender couples, did he? Well, he didn't exactly. He said he now believes in it for "me personally", but that he still thinks the states have the right to decide it for themselves. So, in effect, he supports North Carolina's right to have banned it.
