I'd like to see an outright ban on all private devices above the "partial-zero-emisssions" standard. People wouldn't like it, but I don't see why they have the right to destroy the environment for future generations. And they could spend the money they save on gas to buy bus passes or electric cars.

As I posted in the past, I would support legislation that forced oil-producing companies to devote at least 50% of their profits to alternative fuel source development. If the oil companies don't like it, they can stop producing oil. They've already made enough money selling environmentally destructive products. If they want to continue making a profit they should have to take part in ensuring environmental sustainability.

Here are my votes from the poll that rondino has posted in his opening post here in this thread concerning this "Global Warming" issue:

First, here is my vote on the "Role of Government":

Quote:
5. It's not really a problem at all. Talk of a "global catastrophe" has been exaggerated greatly. There are natural cycles which account for the recent rise in global temperature. In time, the cycle will correct itself.
And, here is my vote concerning the "Role of the Individual":

4. It's not really a problem at all. Talk of a "global catastrophe" has been exaggerated greatly. There are natural cycles which account for the recent rise in global temperature. In time, the cycle will correct itself. I don't feel like humans contribute to the problem at all.

Humans are dumping junk into the air and water every single day by the millions of tons. Of course it will have a global impact. The sheer volume of the pollution is literally beyond the capacity of the mind to grasp.

Every Christian and Jew should be fighting pollution and global warming. In Genesis God commands that man should "be fruitful and subdue the earth," not "breed like rabbits and treat the earth like a toilet."

And, yes, I DO agree that we should not "treat this Earth like a toilet."

However, when I see things like the fact that HUGE polluting nations such as China and India, etc., are not even a part of that Kyoto treaty, while the United States takes all kinds of flak for not having signed on to that treaty, it is a bit of an irritatingly bad joke, in my opinion.

There are MUCH worse problems on the horizon that are coming upon this Earth than this so-called "man-made global warming"; but, it is "funny" that you hear very little mentioned about them in the secular media.

Every major, credible study on climate change that I have read concludes that anthropogenic sources are the most likely cause for the anomalous jump in mean global temperature over the last few decades. Yet you remain skeptical. Why? Where are you getting your information? Are your friends skeptical as well? In your estimation, what percentage of your social circle regards global warming as a non-issue? Are there members of your social circle that take active steps to combat global warming (owning a hybrid car, biking instead of driving to work, composting, avoiding plane travel, maximizing the energy efficiency of the home, etc.)? If so, can you make any generalizations regarding those who do and those who do not regard global warming as a non-issue (i.e. in your social circle is there a difference in attitudes between younger and older members, between religious and non-religious members, between richer and poorer members, between male and female members, etc?).

I don't mean to be rude; I'm genuinely curious.

I think global warming is the greatest problem facing the Earth today.

I think it is even worse than the recently published UN reports states. The UN report does not take in view new measurements that the speed glaciers on Greenland are moving has increased dramatically in the last few years; increasing the melting of the Greenland Ice cap. This is just an example, more and more observations indicate climate changes happens with increasingly speed. So data used by UN for their predictions are outdated even though the data is only a few years old.

What the Governments are doing is too little to late.

On a personal level I try to use my bike more and my car less, and to replace old devices like refrigerators, computers etc. with new devices using less energy (this is doing wonders for my energy bill as well!), but it is limited how much a person can do, action must be taken by the Governments.

But Governments normally never does anything unless they are under pressure, so the awareness of the problems must grow among the people, so the people can put pressure on the governments. So I think the best an individual person can do is to try to increase the awareness of the problem, to try to make other people aware of the problem and to put pressure on the Governments to do something about it.

Michael Crichton's "State of Fear" is an unusual look at this topic.
