He was lying on the trainer's table with acupuncture needles and other medical stuff in him to try to get him healed up--in walked the coach who asked one question. "Doctor," he said, "Can this young man pitch today?" Not "how is he?" or anything like that. When the answer was negative the coach turned around and walked out. Not a word of sympathy or encouragement. This young man never graduated and never made it to the big leagues. They pumped up his dreams to exploit him.
How much of his medical costs did the school pick up?

As long as he was on scholarship. Once he was out he was on his own. I never did find out what happened to him.

Here's a reason NOT to be cynical bout pro sports. One of the best ideas I've heard in a long time: Bypass Lane Comes to the Dell Diamond In short, Nolan Ryan's minor league team is rolling out technology that will allow people to order concessions from their smartphones, and have them delivered to their seats. No more long lines and missing the game while you go to get the grub. I'll be surprised if every park in the country doesn't do this within a few years.

And thus the only exercise at the ball park is eliminated. Another step on the road to perfect obesity.

I'm shocked, shocked that this happened. I thought he'd gone to the CFL.
