The two CFL teams were the Ottawa Rough Riders and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The spellings were different. Toronto has the Argonauts, which is a cool name. Winnipeg's team is the Blue Bombers, but I never learned why they were Blue Bombers.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-eagles-vick&prov=ap&type=lgnsThe Eagles give Vick their award for "courage." If he wants to show his courage, let him go to Afghanistan.

I read the story in full, and still couldn't tell why they gave it to him. I guess as a way of trying to forget how wrong he was and how wrong they were to sign him. Either that or the award goes to whoever made the most headlines in the last year. Between this and the Nobel Peace Prize, it seems to be the year to award prizes for nothing in particular.

Yes, Argonauts is a cool name. I just looked up the Blue Bombers, and see that they've won the Grey Cup (!) 10 times. As for the name, looks like they were named after Joe Louis! Get a load of this: In 1936, during a game against the University of North Dakota, Winnipeg Tribune sports writer Vince Leah remarked "these are the Blue Bombers of Western football". This phrase was referring to then heavyweight champion Joe Louis, known as the Brown Bomber. From that day forward the team has been known as the Blue Bombers.
I used to hear a similar story about the Cleveland Browns. That they were named not only after Paul Brown, but also after Louis, and were sometimes called the Brown Bombers in the early days. Wiki doesn't have anything on this, though. Apparently before this 1936 incident, Winnipeg had the incredibly uninspiring name "The Winnipeg Football Club".

I wonder why he picked Blue, though. Was it that cold?

Winning the Grey Cup ten times (in 79 years) might seem like a lot, but it's nothing compared to the Edmonton Eskimos' thirteen championships since the modern era began in 1949.
And for anyone who thinks the Detroit Lions are bad: playing in a league that usually has only eight teams, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have won the Grey Cup only three times in 100 years.
The weirdest thing about the CFL (weirder than having one team of Roughriders and another of Rough Riders): the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are in the East Division.

I thought that the weirdest thing was the three downs thing. Somehow punting on third down seems weird to Americans. But then again, you do have single payer health care.

I wonder why he picked Blue, though. Was it that cold? Their team colours are blue and gold. I guess the uniforms were more blue than gold.

Yeah. Gold Bombers isn't euphonius, and would only excite someone like Ron Paul.

Winning the Grey Cup ten times (in 79 years) might seem like a lot, but it's nothing compared to the Edmonton Eskimos' thirteen championships since the modern era began in 1949. If my memory serves me correctly, quarterback Warren Moon had a *big part* in at least five or six of those championships, right? Chess Fan
