Petro - I am not sure you ought to root for Anand. If you like both players equally well, then root for a good match and a well run event that positively promotes chess. In the end, if Mr. Mitzvah beats Anand and people seem to think there is a flaw in the system that #22 won the World Championship, they don't understand what effort and strength it took to beat Anand in a match! People said Kramnik wasn't worthy, but history will show he beat Kasparov without losing!
If Mr. Mitzvah beats Anand, he will have completed the journey to the throne and will be a deserved champion. He might not be the best player in the world, but he beat the champ in a match and that's all we can ask for.
I do think Anand will win by a +2 or +3 score. I hope it is not any bigger than that. I would like to see Gelfand get at least 1 win (hopefully early in the match) and I would like to see Anand be behind in the match for a while to test his mettle.
I just hope its some high quality chess without major howler type blunders. Both seem to be great sportsman so I expect a classy affair. I am happy that Gelfand has earned a chance. He has had a very nice career. Couldn't agree more! All that being said, however, I am still looking forward to Aronian-Kramnik a bit more than Anand-Gelfand.

The sad thing is, there is no publicity except in the chess world. I'm expecting Aronian to slaughter Kramnik, btw.
No one in Israel except those who follow this closely knows that Gelfand, an Israeli, is playing for the title. It reminds me of Bobby. There was excitement when the match was actually being played but most chess players even in the US don't know a thing about him. They certainly don't know that Anand is WC.
Something should be done about this, but I don't have a clue.

I heard a story once about Fischer trying to chat up a girl. Can't swear that the story was true, but apparently he had little idea what to say to her, so when he heard she was Dutch, he asked if she'd heard of Max Euwe. Euwe was a nice guy but I don't think invoking his name could get anybody a date.
Yeah, she must have felt the guy Max sounded like eww...

That brings back memories. I remember first starting out playing chess, and going nuts wondering how on earth Euwe's name was pronounced (and using "Ewwww", even though I knew it was probably wrong). I'd been playing for years before I found that it was pronounced "Erva".
Somewhere, in an old Chess Review article or something, there's a poem that's supposed to show you how to pronounce the top player's names by rhyming them with familiar words ("Ragozin is her cousin", and lines like that). I might see if I can find that again.
Two Sheds vs. Mr. Mitzvah begins on May 10, by the way.

Less than a week to go for the Opening Formalities.. but one (unwelcome) thing is, somehow the last few World title matches have coincided with some kind of global or regional danger - such as in 2008, it was the Financial crisis. In 2010, it was the Volcano in Iceland AND ongoing financial crisis.
What will it be in 2012 ?? Is the dreaded End of the World? As per my knowledge, it is supposed to happen in December, not May. So that will hold for some time. Moscow, better keep alert in the next few days...

Does anybody see anything wrong with this picture? Was somebody lazy here, or are they filming a TV commercial (where this kind of thing is mandatory), or are these two wild and crazy guys just having a little chuckle at our expense?

Maybe someone was in a funny mood. As you can see on other photos, the screen in the back is showing the opening moves 1.e4 d5 2.Bb5+ Qd7 3.Qh5 Qxb5 4.exd5. Curiously, the ChessBase report has a mirrored version of the photo on top, and another of the same scene in correct orientation further below (with the caption "We heroically resisted posting this image at the top of our report – to drive our readers nuts!").

Kasparov, the **** has this to say
The uniqueness of the forthcoming match, as I see it, is in the fact that for the first time in the modern World Chess Championships history the match between the legitimate world champion and a legitimate candidate won’t be a fight for the title of the strongest chess player of the world.

Well, I thought it was simple enough. Look at the color of the square at the right hand corner of each player.

I would like to see many more returns of these type of statements from Kasparov! I hope there is no foul play attempt and I hope to see Anand keeps his crown.
