Gelfand could have easily missed 17..Nc6 too as he was in shock but the problem was there was no counter for black. 18.dxc6 Qxc6 19.Bg2 Qd7 20.Nd5 with unavoidable fork on f6 square. White will simply be a piece up with better piece development.

Even after seeing all the analysis, this patzer still doesn't understand why this was not somewhat premature resignation by Gelfand. After 17..Nc6, in material terms he ends up with a rook and 2 pawns for the pair of knights. Ok, I know black's position is supposed to be a shambles and Fritz 9 (given an airing after several years) gives an evaluation of 1.38 which is a virtually certain loss at this level, but could Gelfand really not have played on a bit longer. Unless, of course, he was so shocked by 17 Qf2 that he could not focus and didn't see Nc6.

The resignation was probably premature. But despite the mere 1.5+ (that too if Gelfand saw Nc6), it's a horrible situation to have a queen, rook, bishop and knight directed against a king with broken pawn structure. It would probably only have wasted Gelfand's energy. I believe human assessment would be significantly worse than the -1.5 that the engine gives, which is merely counting material, not looking at the position quality.

Broken pawn structure for Gelfand? I don't know if even a GM would understand this? wink

wonder how engines gives evals like +/= 0.44 etc in the opening when no capture made and the material is even. confused
