That would be bad news for black I think. Black probably would want to count on the kingside structure being frozen, so that he could even look for a fortress by sacrificing the knight for the a6 pawn, if need be. However, if black has to deal with progress on the kingside as well, then it's unpleasant to put it mildly.

Drawn. I great game, in my opinion, and a cut above the previous draws. I think Gelfand had ways he could have gone that would have been better. His chances could only have gotten better if he played g4 and kept Anand from locking up the kingside. I think this is a psychological victory for Gelfand. He seems to have recovered after the previous game, and was even pressing with an advantage for a good portion of today.

Yes, 34. P-N4 was Mitzvah's best chance to win. It's not clear and it's very tricky, but there are positions resulting from it that seem to give him a lot better chances than what he got. But I still haven't found a clear win.

The "missed" winning line for Gelfand.

34.g4! f4 35.h4 Kg8 36.Kg2 Kh7 37.h5 Kg8 38.Kh3 Kh7 39.Kh4 Re7 40.Qe4+ Kh8 41.Qe5+ Kg8 42.g5! hxg5 43.Qxg5+ Kh7 44.h6 f6 45.Qh5 (with zug) Nc7 (Nb6 samething) 46.Qc5 Nd5 47.Kh5 Rc7 48.Qf8! Re7 49.f3 (zug again!) Rc7 50.Qe8 Re7 51.Qg6+ Kh8 52.Qb1! winning (White should grab pawns and win to both 52..Nb6 and 52..Rc7).

I thought Anand will respond to 34.g4 with f4 but then fxg4 is simple and there is nothing much for Gelfand. So Anand wasn't losing.

I thought Black's best chance was with 34...fxg4, rather than 34...f4.

Yeah, that is how it looks. But my intuition was for 34...f4 with black king somehow blockading the pawn which is not there as me+computer line shows.

Yeah, I see what you mean, but in the long term, f4 gives White the chance to get that passed h pawn.

Anyway, it certainly wasn't a quick draw, which is what I predicted.
