In the user profiles, this message board offers a function "ignore user." But it doesn't work. I have put a member on my ignore list, but I still see his postings while I'm being logged in. I guess the function needs to be activated somewhere in the message board software. Thanks! laugh

The ignore user function does not block all posts by the user in question on the public message board. I believe it only blocks PM communication. I agree that it would be nice if an "ignore user" function as you describe it existed.

Yeah, it's only for PMs. Sorry for the downer info.

And now it does! In the New and Improved Industrial-Strength ChessNinja Board (tm), fortified with Niacin and Hagablab, the Ignore Feature not only blocks PMs, it also blocks a User's Posts! You see that a post is there, but its content is blanked out, like so:

How much would you pay for this feature? Wait! Don't answer! It also blocks offending shouts in the Shout Box, like this!:

Quote:

Offending User: * Moron *

Plus, if you call now, you get this free set of Kasparov-Kasimdzhanov tumblers, just for trying the service! *

That's the New and Improved Chessninja Ignore Feature! Ask for it by name, in your grocer's freezer!

* (So long as you agree to haul them away in lots of 5 gross or more)

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.

It works somewhat, but still displays post space for the blocked user. The main annoyance - the main reason - I wanted such a feature was to block one user who usually posts irrelevant or non sequitur one-liners... unfortunately, with this ignore function, the exact same amount of space/interruption remains in place, whether the user is ignored or not.

Unfortunately, I don't think this message board allows for the actual removal of the annoyance (the interruption to smooth reading), but requires that the semi-blocked post be left. There are some message boards that eliminate it entirely, which was (I thought) the whole point. I still have to manually skip over the blocked user's posts as it stands now; I never did read them anyway, so nothing at all has changed with my experience reading content here. Eh...

That's true. Chessgames.com, for example, does it that way. But people don't create their own threads there. Here, it would be awkward if an Ignored User started a thread, but it looked as though the first person to reply had started it.

Of course, they could leave the empty space there for the first post of a thread, but not for subsequent ones. If you want to suggest changes to how the UBB Threads software itself works, they've got a page at:

http://www.ubbcentral.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/cfrm

They've got some neat features enacted there that aren't turned on here. For example, instead of an overall Top Posters List, they have a Top Posters of the Last 30 Days List.

I also wish there was a way so you could hide your Post Count entirely. I don't like people knowing how much time I waste online. Kind of like how USCL had a meter at sign-on showing how what percentage of your life has been spent there since you registered. One of the most depressing statistics I ever saw in my life. I used to sometimes stay signed in when I was away from the keyboard, so I wouldn't have to sign back in when I came back, but I stopped doing that when they added that thing. You can hide from the "Who's Online" feature, but you can't hide from the Post Counter. There have been so many instances of people admitting that they were posting just to raise their count, that those numbers should be hidden completely and just replaced with a Last 30 Days List (if that).

Unfortunately, if the feature doesn't already exist in the software, Mig can't turn it on. You'd have to direct that kind of feedback to the UBB Threads site.

I kind of like it this way, honestly. Since the blank spaces are all virtually identical, I trained myself after a few days to just kind of mentally block them out entirely. When I do notice them, I frankly enjoy the reminder of all the nonsense that I'm missing out on. All the bullying and whining and self-pitying wiped out. * I think that now, if I had the choice of having it this way or the other way, I'd choose this one.

I'm digging the new "ignore" feature. I now automatically log in on arrival, to be sure to miss my non-favorites. Really thins down some of the WCh threads.

Pity one can't ignore users' "shouts", as well...
