To recap: Malthrope has definitely removed himself from the pool of candidates. I'm pretty sure that goes for Ed as well. But we've got a sucker in Sachbinger, yay!

This is how the numbers look at the moment (see table below). Not sure if the numbers mean anything, but if it is on a rotation, then we are looking at BachSinger, Octal, Malthrope and Matt as next moderators. And BachSinger has already confirmed. smile

Are Octal, Malthrope and Matt ready to take over?

Ninjas, it's not a matter of rotation as in "everyone gets a chance" and "former mods come back when it gets to their turn again. It's Mig's call and he asked for our suggestions. But, he will decide who will take the next turn. Thus is not a democracy. It's Mig's board.

I officially support Gelatinous Cube's nomination. He's smart, funny, and most importantly Canadian (even if he is from that least Canadian of all provinces).

I must admit I didn't even consider nominating GC because I assumed he wouldn't want to do it. But lo and behold it turns out he's a sucker too. So, great! I think he'd be a good mod.

Given that two of my initial endorsements (littlefish and Malthrope) have declined the job, let me offer a revised list:

1. octal (even though he's a Montananananer and spends more time playing World of Warcraft than can possibly be healthy)
2. SachBinger (even though he's <shudder> Dutch and despite the fact that he still hasn't changed his name back to the proper, and easily mocked, BachSinger)
3. Gelatinous Cube (only because he lives within a few hundred miles of me and has the best avatar)

4. ...

I'm torn. Madhatter would be superduper, but she did not acknowledge her endorsement. Eddie would be great, but he rarely visits and will probably die soon from heart disease given that he eats an ungodly number of Big Macs. Supergrobi would, it goes without saying, be great too, but he has already had a modding turn.

On the other hand, Russianbear has expressed an interest. I concur with Petrosianic that his posts tend to generate controversy and that as a mod I have received a large number of PMs from other members asking that I get off my butt and do something about one of his posts. Furthermore, I am somewhat reluctant to endorse someone who has shown so much public disdain for the current group of moderators. But, as the Fairest Person Alive I am determined not to let my personal feelings influence my decision. There is no doubt that Russianbear is intelligent and that he knows his chess. Equanimity is not his strong suit, but then equanimity is not my strong suit when it comes to certain topics either. So....

4. Russianbear (may god have mercy on me)*

* That last bit was a joke. I'm sure Russianbear will do a fine job (by which I mean I will be shocked if he does a fine job)** if named moderator.

** Another joke. Sort of.***

*** You get the idea.

I thank you, rondino, for your kind words, and Ed for nominating me. I'm not able to be on the board as much as would be necessary for a mod. So I must decline, with thanks.

Yes, the poll isn't important, and its ballot was chosen by a now-proven troll. There's nothing official about it whatsoever, and Cube isn't even on it. Its results don't matter.

All that matters is what Mig thinks, and, to a lesser degree, what the inmates would be happy with.

Perhaps he could pledge to be Canadian only during the World Cup.

Well, this would pull him away from it for a bit. Besides, Warcraft II was the best of the series, anyway.

So far our lists match, though I wouldn't want anyone else to feel slighted. There are actually lots of good candidates I can think of, some who haven't even been named at all.

Knows his chess certainly. As for the other... well, I don't want to get personal either, but he does have a marked tendency to hear something totally different than what was said to him, and to fail to grasp elementary distinctions, especially when he feels challenged personally (which is often). I could give examples, but that might be mean. Suffice it to say that I don't agree with this evaluation.

If that seems personal anyway, I'd suggest simply that anyone who believes literally that "**** You" is an acceptable post, but that deleting "**** You" is abusive is automatically disqualified from consideration. You can't possibly mod if you have no idea what's appropriate and what isn't. Not a personal statement, just a simple fact. If you think anything goes, then you have no reason to be there at all.

When you took a hiatus late last year, you recommended Krish as a good replacement. Recommend him again, you Evans Gambit Refusing so-and-so!

That from the author of this thread ?

Well, clearly YOU think it is acceptable, because you have included it in your message. I do not see how lack of bias toward asterisks should automatically disqualify anyone.

I for one think this is getting too accusative to be in a moderation voting thread. Or in a chess message board generally speaking.

Not that this voting means anything anyway: I’m one of the nominees, for crying out loud (AND I got one vote. Yay!).

Yeah, true. But there's been limited response in this thread. It's my gut feeling that those who are interested in being a mod have replied in this thread. Otherwise, they are either disinterested or don't read threads like this, both of which pretty much disqualify them from the job.

Okay. I think we all have a tendency to hear what we want to hear and to discount the rest, but I understand your point.

Well this is certainly true. But there's a difference between **** you and **** you, if you know what I mean. It depends on context. I have used my share of profanity on these boards in the past. Mostly in good fun, but occasionally not. When in good fun, fine, when not, not fine, and the post should be deleted. Personal attacks are unacceptable, period, you're absolutely right.

Does Russianbear really believe that personal attacks are acceptable? Russianbear?

Krish does not want to do the job. I believe he said so earlier in this thread.
