Republicans lost this one because they're their own worst enemies. They are ideological purists in a way that would astound even moveon.org-ers--if such lefty loons bothered to speak civilly to their "enemies".
Years ago, when I was single and hung around with a crop of male friends whom I don't hang around with at all nowadays, I went to a lot of places to shoot, a lot of ranges and a lot of private property where people shot off their mouths as much as their guns. Also, I went to a lot more gun stores to get ammo and patches and such, a lot more stores than I go to now to get my gun stuff. I also went to a few gun shows, but of course one is much like another and that quickly became a waste of time after I'd seen or bought whatever I wanted, which wasn't much.
But the point is, I saw a lot of the right-wing equivalent of the lefty loons, and these people hated liberals and saw themselves as somehow morally superior because they refused to compromise on anything political. They would rather screw themselves by not voting than support any sort of moderate candidate. Of course, moderate, or lukewarm, republicans (Spock's RINOs), are the worst possible candidates, and indeed rarely do well. The conservative base is not going to come out for moderates. They are going to ignore the reality, as they ignore so much of the rest of reality, that not voting is always a vote for the Democrats.
I think with this in mind the Republicans are going to have to come out with a firebreathing, hardcore candidate, as the alternative is a waste of time. No more McCain types--McCain, a guy who is for illegal immigration, who attacked the 1st Amendment (McCain-Feingold) and has an F- rating on the 2nd Amendment (ridiculous--we trusted him in wartime with a jet fighter plane loaded with weapons and he doesn't want to trust his fellow Americans with guns!). No more Romney, who played it Mr. Safe all the way--no attacks on the entitlement state, no attacks on the disgraceful Democratic handling of consulate security in Libya that produced the Benghazi debacle--and justifiable got creamed.
Every day the left gets stronger simply by bringing in more people, many of them illegally, and most of those from the dysfunctional, drug- and corruption-riddled cesspool of a nation called Mexico, and the longer Republicans waste time with weak candidates, the longer they keep downplaying their message, the worse their chances are to win an election.
And speaking of elections, when are the conservatives going to clean up the rolls? There's no way in hell that Obama repeatedly scored hundred or near hundred percent victories in places like Philadelphia and Cleveland. That is blatant fraud, and if the republicans lack the guts to call the Dems on it, they might as well turn in their party cards and vote liberal.
As for myself, I'm going to get a lot more politically involved, and that includes slamming fellow conservatives for not only not fighting back the way I think they should, but for tolerating assholes in their party who are religious kooks, and who talk about offensive nonsense like "legitimate rape", and who tell lies about or who demonize the Dems--who are bad enough as they are and don't need to be misrepresented in order to be defeated.
This country could still be great again, and maybe a reformed, resurgent Republican party can be a part of that, but not the way it performs under its current management.
Meanwhile, let's hammer the President on the lies he tells, and see if we can't either hogtie him politically, or either impeach him or force him to resign under threat of impeachment. His atrocious mismanagement of the government certainly merits everything conservatives can legally do to oppose him.
