Chess, What's Chess?
I'll try to update now and then, but chess is not exactly tops on my list right now. Here the divine Ms. Tyrious illustrates the attractions of my sister's front yard, more or less. Welcome to the island of Spanish Wells, which is off the beaten track even by Bahamian standards.
Any vacation plans out there? Chess vacations? You can always check out, or add to, our "places to play chess" item.

Posted by: chesstraveler at December 2, 2006 12:45I played in Merida, Mexico, at the Carlos Torre Memorial. December is very pleasant there. Vacation-wise, there are nature preserves, museums, beaches (Merida is NOT on the coast, so you'd have to travel some miles), the milieu, and of course about a dozen Maya ruin sites (none of whom is named Polgar).
I did check the 'places to play' thread, but didn't see any chess vacation suggestions.

Posted by: Charley at December 3, 2006 18:10Spanish Wells "off the beaten track"? C'mon, Mig, Eleuthera may be one of the Out Islands, but it's a big-time resort, just a puddle-hop from the Berry Islands or Abaco.
It reminds me of flying in a light plane into Andros one day. Nothing much seemed to be happening, so we parked in front of the "terminal", hardly more than a cottage.
We hired a taxi and went looking around; for lunch we went to a restaurant at a resort hotel. There one of the airport officials tracked us down, and told us to move our plane. He said it was the third-busiest airport in the Bahamas.

The only people here live here (like my sister and her family) or know someone who does. Still a pretty place, they don't have tourists and don't want them. It's all commercial fishing, mostly lobster. It's an oddly suburban little town.

I miss the serenity of a quiet anchorage, the exhilaration of sailing smooth clear waters, free-diving for grouper and lobster, and the lasting frienships.
Now I got a mortgage and spend my days within the confines of a cubicle. Oh well.

Posted by: SharkBite at December 4, 2006 10:30More than 30 years ago (before independence), I used to go to Sandy Point. We dealt for lobster tails under a palm tree while a girl shelled conch nearby, throwing the empties onto a pile taller than a man.
Back then, electric power came from diesel generators – for those who could afford them – and telephone service ceased at 5 pm, when the radio operator went home. And under colonial rule, white men weren't allowed to stay overnight in the "settlements".
The last I heard, though, people in Marsh Harbour were blogging on the Internet during hurricanes. I wonder how much has changed.
