According to various reports in the Russian press in the past few hours, FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was in a car accident today in Moscow. He had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. According to one report, he was in the front passenger seat and hit the windshield because he was not wearing a seatbelt. He was in a chauffeured Mercedes, and the accident was with a woman in a Ford Focus. The state of her health has not been given yet from what I can find. A few of the reports add "the woman had the green light," but "responsibility has not been decided." I hope everyone is all right.
Several reports mention Ilyumzhinov won't be able to attend the opening of the Dresden Olympiad tonight. I'm sure he'll be missing out on some serious lederhosen action during the inevitable folkloric dancing/torture section of the ceremony. Remember the first rule of these things: withhold your jokes until we're sure he's all right. You'd feel terrible if he suddenly took a turn for the worse and Sarah Palin had to take over FIDE.
Those Germans build cars so well that probably there's not much hope for chess...

Yeah, I'm sure she's quite competent in chess. She would probably drill holes on the chessboard. Make all African teams get together and form one team because one country should have one team.

I am sincerely praying that Kirsan goes into coma and his body is frozen in Siberia until he wakes in 3008 and says that the accident was a set-up by Makropolous to steal his FIDE presidency and declares he is ready to sponsor WC match between Topa and Kamsky.

I just like the word "lederhosen." Since folkloric dancing and/or costumes seem to be a mandatory thing at FIDE events, what did they do in Dresden?!

Can the IE6 people confirm the problem with the right column appearing in the middle of the page is fixed? My online emulator says it is, and it showed the problem before.

Hmm, weird. Now I can't reproduce it, which isn't good. Time to get a decent browser, IE6 people! I'll look around a bit more, but if my IE6 emulator says fixed I have no way of knowing when it's still broken.
I have a good browser at home, but at work we have restrictions on when upgrades are allowed. We are stuck with IE6 in the meantime...
