Smallville Checkmate

Not what I was expecting either when I saw those two words together. Never seen the show.

Speaking of the more famous ICC Smallville, he recently won the Dos Hermanas online blitz tournament.

He also won the St. Louis open more recently! He got to play 4 chicks in his 5 games. One actually drew him!

Actually there were four GMs tied for first with 4.5/5 (Nakamura, Hess, Friedel, Ramirez), with only one game between them. Says something about 5-round Swisses ... . That game was a quick final-round draw between Hess and Ramirez - given earlier discussions here, a decisive result might have been considered suspicious?

I don't quite understand GM Finegold's comment after losing to one of the chicks:
"Alisa misplayed the opening slightly, and I went overboard trying to punish her for it and lost as a result," Finegold said. "It was like both of my marriages."
http://main.uschess.org/content/view/10310/585
What does he mean with his (ex-)wifes misplaying the opening?

And according to the pictures at the end of the report it looks like the GMs had fun with the chicks - note the XXL picture of Finegold and Abrahamyan.

I saw the video on Chessbase re Kasparov's simul 22 years ago.. Pretty amazing stuff. Who's the bearded chappie in the consultations with Gary? Is it Frederic?

Couple of things that struck me... Even given the handicap of time and the dilution of effort I was a bit surprised at how difficult Gary found it. Secondly, I was a bit taken aback at the pretty vocal objection to the draw by Garry! I agree it was pathetically wimpy of Daniel to bail to a draw after 10 moves or so in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but he was within his rights!

Anyway pretty fascinating stuff!

It is rather ambiguous:

"Alisa misplayed the opening slightly, and I went overboard trying to punish her for it and lost as a result," Finegold said. "It was like both of my marriages."

So what he may mean is:

"My ex-wives didn't do everything from the start exactly as I would prefer. I went overboard trying to punish them for this, so of course they both beat my sorry ass and left".

Or, alternatively:

"I am a big (at least literally) GM, so when female players beat me I feel very bad. This makes me say very stupid things."

lmao, great post gs

Or...he tried to make a joke out of losing?

"He got to play 4 chicks in his 5 games"
"GMs had fun with the chicks"

Classy - you'd think a WIM defeating a GM or Krush's result might garner a little respect from chessplayers. Nah, they're all 'chicks'.

Hey relax ... I guess #caleague only referred to the remarkable fact that Nakamura played five women in a row. Implicit (but maybe not even intended) in his statement: he didn't play the very strongest opponents, including his three co-winners [it's a simple and undeniable fact that the women were weaker ELO-wise].

It comes down to just how derogatory the term "chick" is meant to be - I would say a chick is not a fish, or in any case a fish can be male or female.

And my comment "GMs had fun with the chicks" referred to the pictures on the USCF webpage, obviously taken between the games.
If you feel like complaining, GM Finegold might be the right addressee - maybe he tried to be funny, maybe he was a sore loser, in any case he didn't show too much respect for his female opponent (missing something like "she played well" in his statement).

"And my comment "GMs had fun with the chicks" referred to the pictures on the USCF webpage, obviously taken between the games."

Read this again. Like I said - classy.

"I would say a chick is not a fish, or in any case a fish can be male or female."
Hey, not bad!

"I would say a chick is not a fish..."

I'd like to add that a moose is not a bat.

"I'd like to add that a moose is not a bat."

This is nothing more than pure provocation on your part, and I invite you to defend these inflammatory remarks.

Chick is not a derogatory term. Anyone trying to make chick into an insult IS an idiot. There we go, there is a derogatory term for you: idiot. Chick is simply another word for female, woman, girl, babe and so on.

One would note one of those "chicks" actually managed to draw him. Quite a beautiful game too Zenyuk-Nakamura. She missed a win because she had less than 10 seconds on her clock.

Of course 'chick' can be male or female too.

Changing subject I received yesterday and already watched the DVD movie "Me and Bobby Fischer", which tells the story of how Fischer's former 1972 body guard Sammy Something got Fischer out of jail in Japan and into Iceland. What a pathetic documentary (although I must admit it contains some vintage footage of the 1972 match, which I had not seem in such a high resolution before). All the Icelanders involved with this movie don't seem to understand at first that in their many interviews with the great Bobby they are actually talking with someone with a serious mental condition!

Poor Sammy looks dumbfolded and demoralized to discover his "friend" Bobby has been consumed by mental illness. The other Icelanders who try to communicate with Bobby during the many interviews soon realize the lights are on but nobody is in there. We live in interesting times, where certain people try to gain some publicity at the expense of someone with mental illness. Just to be clear I do not share any of Fischer’s views about the US, Jews, pre arranged results in chess, etc, etc and view those as hallucinations of a mentally sick man.

I guess one can argue that if Fischer had the right to make his rants public then his “friends” have the right to produce a documentary like this. I call this poor taste though and wonder about the jurisprudence in such cases. Suppose you are a family member (say a daughter) of a famous figure (say a writer), and your livelihood depends on the royalties received from your father’s works. Your father one day goes crazy and starts making all sorts of crazy statements, which get amplified by the media, and negatively impact the sales of your father’s books. You go to court and ask a judge to prevent any statement from your mentally sick father to be circulated by the media on the grounds his reasoning is compromised as a result of his illness (of course this needs to be proved first and I realize in some cases this is difficult and that there is a fine line between normal and sick mental condition; however I line must be drawn somewhere). This is exactly what happened to Fischer but he did not have a family member that would go to court on his behalf!

In a way Fischer was the court clown but a society that needs a mentally sick man as its clown is sick itself.

That dvd cant be worst than your review and comments .

I'd be happy to listen to the reasons of your criticism Manu, assuming there is any.

A) way to highjack the thread retard.
B) What manu said.
C) What a ridiculous pile of BS on the legal jurisprudence baloney. You sir should be ashamed to exist.

So you think the "friends" of Bobby Fischer and the media have the right to expose the opinions of a mentally sick man to public mockery? You should be ashamed of yourself IRED. Instead of rants try some arguments, I know it is challenging but as a chess player I assume you may have the mental power to do so.

Well since this Fischer thread is even more filled with vacuous abuse, I'll go back to the previous one and point out that the "idiots" who regard the use of "chick" to mean woman (rather than baby chicken) as "usually offensive" include the people at Webster's Dictionary (not really notorious for its Marxist-feminist slant). Perhaps this is not understood in certain circles in California. But you need to get out more.

Ok you asked politely , i'll answer accordingly :
You describe the islanders working at that movie as incapable of understanding Fischer condition , but giving your simplistic description of Bobby it seems to be you the one who uses the abacus for counting sheep at knight.
Then you wonder about the jurisprudence , taste and rights of the people who produced the documentary while hinting a complete vacuum of knowledge on each and every one of the subjects you mentioned.
And that is of course not the end of it , for the finale you leave us with the most ridiculously biased , implausible and inaccurate parallelism that this threads have seen since Thomas 's advent.
The least you can do know is upload the dvd somewhere and leave the link here.
:)

An example from a prior century would be Nietzsche and his sister's actions after his death.

His sister issued a collection of half-completed ideas as "Will to Power" and essentially contributed to the upside-down rendering of his philosophy. Nietzche went from being a cosmopolitan to a Nazi figure after his death -- what a disgrace to the man's body of work (which IMHO is some of the most important work ever done by man).

PS "chick" is definitey diminutive and derogatory...in the same style as "babe" or the modern "ho." The male equivalent would be "hunk" or "stud", as in WIM whatsername managed to play five "studs" in succesion in the tourney.

Wait - "stud" actually has some positive connotation. Chick connotates bikers and has no such coolness factor in 2010.

Better WIM watsername had to play five "drones" in the tourney. There you go.

Speaking of drone, there seems to be a lot of it in this thread. As in on and on and on and on.

Another week till the match starts ...

Chick is not a derogatory term! LOL which century are you in - try asking a woman if she finds it derogatory - if you have the guts as even asking the question puts you in a bad position hahhahahha

I know chick isn't a derogatory term. I was trying to get that exact point across to Babsontask who tried to attack me on the grounds I was demeaning women.

Come on your using it as a slang term for women why is their sex relevant?? its just their rating as far as results against GM's are concerned. I guess you would be happy for your girlfriend/wife /sister /mother to be referred to as a chick? I guess Judit Polgar and You Houfan are chicks? Oh sorry Polgars too old and maybe Houfan maybe isnt pretty enough.

It's either you are or'you're' not 'your'. Thanks.

There is a new kid on the block I see. Kid in the literal sense.

yeah right thats important oops that's I mean not the content right LOL

seems to be :)

Imagine a group of lawyers or doctors, men and women, went to a conference. Now imagine some genius labelled a photo of a group of doctors - "Looks like the doctors had fun with chicks".

Now do you get it? Like I said - classy.

Doctors never have fun!

Ha! Mostly true - apart from plastic surgeons.

Chick is not a derogatory term! LOL which century are you in - try asking a woman if she finds it derogatory - if you have the guts as even asking the question puts you in a bad position hahhahahha

Try using it at work for about a week.

Ah the number of idiots multiplies. I give up. Take offense if you must - it only makes you look stupid. In no way does it change the fact people will continue use the word legitimately. In fact, it might increase its use just to piss off the idiot gallery.

CHICKS CHICKS CHICKS CHICKS CHICKS CHICKS

It's true. "Chicks" is a patronising word to use in this context. "Offensive" is debatable. It's not really offensive IMO, just patronising and rather immature. Is the guy employed by Chessbase perchance?
Now let's move on....

Now saucy jade or wanton temptress these are immature and offensive... but chicks is an every day run of the mill word that could be substituted as I stated above for female, girl and woman. You might be stuck in the 50s when it had a slang context (lord let you'd be ancient)... but in this day in age nothing of ill will is meant by it. Now we can we move on as you say.

"chicks is an every day run of the mill word that could be substituted as I stated above for female, girl and woman."

Really?
Ill will-no. But it is not an equivalent to "woman" or "female" in all registers. Would the news feature an article on "chick doctors", for example?
It still has a slang context, and I'm not 30 yet.
Is your GP a woman or a "chick"? If your boss was female, would you describe her as a "chick" to another female ranking above you at work?
Is Angela Merkel described as a "chick" in the news? Why not? Inappropriate register?

Some chicks are better than others ,
some chicks-mothers are better than other chicks-mothers...

Actually, about 10-20 years ago some German media called Angela Merkel "das Mädchen" (the girl). But that was before she became a bit older, and much more powerful ... .
I dunno about comparable cases past and present: Maggie Thatcher was the Iron Lady (at least on the continent), Hillary Clinton was/is ... ?

Hillary Clinton was/is ... ?

a great person.

caleague

I wonder if, whilst at a family meeting and meaning no ill-will, you would refer to your mother as a 'chick'.

Hardy, please don't speak ill of Hillary Clinton, didn't she die in a hail of bullets climbing out of a helicopter? We must honour her memory.
Thomas, was that "bild.de"?
Manu, cheer up and listen to a happy band.

IMO they were happy , im glad you noticed it.
:)

The rumours of her death were greatly exaggerated. She dodged the bullets extremely adroitly and made a heroic entry into the airbase in question. What a brave person? Nearly as heroic as Dubya, the all-conquering fighter pilot.

No it was not, or not only bild.de - which I do not read ,:) . It goes back to a period when she was probably hardly known outside of Germany and when former chancellor Helmut Kohl brought her into politics - because she was talented and/or because she represents two "minorities" in politics, female and from East Germany. Accordingly, the term also existed as "Kohl's girl", and apparently Kohl himself called her affectionately "mein Mädchen" (not quite the same connotation as 'my girl' in English).

Later, things changed when Kohl lost the elections and it became known that the German Christian Democrats had received illegal donations, of which Kohl refused to disclose the origin. To make a long story short (I couldn't be fully objective about the details *), Merkel stepped out of Kohl's shadow, "the girl had suddenly grown up" ... .

* I am not a particular fan of either politician, and also think Kohl's historical role in German reunification is, to say the least, exaggerated

Indeed, but on point 4 you are clearly misguided.

The Amida Buddha would be disappointed in your post.

That's ridiculous, you idiot..."人多慾" is clearly an unoffensive term for any woman. Michelle Obama was called "人多慾" by Paul Krugman in his Nobel acceptance speech.

Mig, it's time for a Anand-Topa-Eyjafjallajökull blog.

Hi Kirsan! I thought the modern phrase in Vulcan is 。)) 肉 rather than 。) 肉?
After the 3rd Vulcan Philology Rationalization Conference which you chaired I thought this was was one of the exceptions you agreed to in a backroom deal with the double-bracket faction?

Yep, definitely: looks like the Bulgarian federation - if not specifically Topalov or even Danailov, who's no doubt pulling strings behind the scenes (?) - is playing hardball re: Anand's plea for a postponement of a few days due to the slight fact of his not being able, for reasons entirely out of his control, to be at the site at the appointed time. As though he could have friggin' foreseen the volcano & its consequences. As though ANYONE could've done so. No, any excuse to try to rattle him, if not actually win games (e.g., by forfeit if he shows up late), by any means possible besides actually PLAYING, or being fair...if Topalov was a true sportsman he'd insist on starting the match when Anand was ready. Period. But no....anyway, perfect foil for a column titled "Daily Dirt," no?! Mig, what's your take on the situation? Pretty amazing, eh?!

The right thread for your display of ignorance would be ¨World Championship runup begings¨, at least until Mig creates another one, thx.

"Display of ignorance" ?! I posted a comment about a situation that needs a thread, & ventured an opinion, whereas you dropped poopoo & ran, like my dog but not with anyone to pick up after your inconsiderate self. So unless you're a member of the canine kingdom (but not as nice as my dog), please clarify your puerile comment or go play with other animals.
