I've just been informed that Larry Parr has passed away in Malaysia. He was an impressive figure, though I don't think we ever met beyond exchanging piles of message board posts and emails. I corresponded with him regularly during the Karpov campaign last year, in which he was very active, and didn't know he had fallen ill. Abd Hamid Majid sends:
It is with sadness that I inform friends and associates that Mr Larry Parr former editor of ChessLife and co author of Dato' Tan Chin Nam's autobiography 'Never Say I Assume' and other chess books passed away after a short illness in Kuala Lumpur. He passed away this morning @ 6:52am on 2nd April 2011.
His family, Samboon Parr (wife), Christiana Parr (daughter) and Ian Parr
(son) were with him the last month in Subang Jaya Medical Center and University Hospital.
Larry was born in Seattle, USA, studied in Washington University, and the last few years was working with Dato' Tan Chin Nam in Malaysia.His last article for ChessLife on GM Larry Evans was published in the March 2011 issue.
Larry Christiansen had better take good care of himself next year.

I used to live in KL and knew Larry. Here's the info I received:
Larry passed away peacefully on Saturday 2nd April 2011 at the Universiti Melaya Medical Centre. He had infection of livers, lungs, heart and brain.
Tentative schedule of funeral :
Sat (2 April) afternoon - Cremation
Sun (3 April) Church service for his ashes.
May his soul rest in peace.
I first met Larry back in 1969 when we were both studying languages at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. Although we hadn't corresponded in many years, I'm sorry to say, I will always remember his stories, deep chess knowledge, strong opinions and love of Peking Duck. Rest in peace, old friend.
Larry was a great friend - to me, and to many - and this is shocking news.
A year ago, I spent several days visiting with him and, and also with Larry Evans. It's hard to believe that they are both now gone.
Larry was an amazing mixture of intellect, vigor, candor, and discretion.
RIP, Binky. There won't ever be another quite like you again.

Larry moved to Malaysia in the 1990s. I'm one of the many friends of Larry in Malaysia. He would still come to local chess tournaments to watch and say hello to everyone. He last played in a local team event several years ago. Larry was always a source of information, he remembered everything he read. We miss him.

There are about 400 of us from his high school school years that are mourning his death. We just learning about it from his daughter this morning. It was a great blow as we didn't know he was ill. He will be definitely missed but never forgotten. It warms my heart to see he had so many good friends!
