Chess in Armenian Schools

| Permalink | 146 comments

I'm not sure why this is news. Surely Armenia isn't the first country to make chess compulsory in schools.

Armenia is to make chess a compulsory subject in primary schools in an attempt to turn itself into a global force in the game, the education ministry said on Friday. "Teaching chess in schools will create a solid basis for the country to become a chess superpower," an official at the ministry, Arman Aivazian, told AFP.

The authorities led by President Serzh Sarkisian, an enthusiastic supporter of the game, have committed around $1.5 million (one million euros) to the scheme -- a large sum in the impoverished but chess-mad country. Children from the age of six will learn chess as a separate subject on the curriculum for two hours a week. Aivazian said the lessons which start later this year would "foster schoolchildren's intellectual development" and teach them to "think flexibly and wisely".

The game is hugely popular in Armenia, where grandmasters are stars and important match results make headline news. The country of 3.2 million people...

It mentions Aronian and that Armenia won the Olympiad in 2006 and 2008, which seems pretty superpowerish to me. Isn't it somehow redundant to formally put chess in the curriculum in a chess-crazy country like Armenia? It's like making skiing compulsory in Norway or making bacon compulsory in America. Oh, it is, right.

This page is a nice summary of studies and research papers on chess in schools and its impact on development and achievement. There's the usual correlation vs causation problem in most of these studies, of course. Societies really don't like doing serious compulsory experiments on kids, for mostly obvious reasons, so it's hard to do rigorous double-blind experiments with the control groups and random selection needed to produce good science. Plus, the people guiding the experiments are often chess people with a strong desire for the results to come out with a positive spin for chess.

None of this is to say that chess can't improve reasoning or reading scores or discipline -- I believe it can -- but it's also hard to say that kids who are motivated enough to stick with a chess program aren't also motivated enough to improve in other ways relative to kids who don't stick with chess. (E.g. most kids who regularly work on music or painting also have better reading scores than kids who don't.) Patience and focus are increasingly shown to be the determining success factors in (American) school environments. Chess both teaches and rewards these characteristics. One of my favorite statistics in recent years is the one that showed the highest correlation between standardized tests at the high school level and college GPA was not the test scores themselves but how long the students took on each question. More time, better future GPA. Work matters.

The recent book Nurtureshock, while rather pop-y in that conveniently superficial Gladwellian way, and despite the "how do we write the next "Freakanomics?" title, is a great overview of the state of science (and lack of science) in education and early learning. Their discussions about what we really don't know are often more illuminating than those about what we do know. You might recognize the author's name. Bronson's The Nudist on the Late Shift was a good piece on the dotcom/tech culture. He's a keen observer. I strongly recommend Nurtureshock to anyone interested in early education or anyone with or around small kids. It genuinely had an impact on my own parenting and how my wife and I look at schooling environments for our kids.

Mig, I love reading your blog. Great tip to read these books. Dissecting Praise, very powerful in kids and chess. Great!
Thanks
Jim

I thought Russia was thinking about a required chess course also. Personally, I think it's a good idea.

Thanks.

Yury

All evidence points to chess not being anything other than a great board game.

People not familiar with the game often assume that great skill at the game is an unmistakable sign of superior intelligence. Believing chess develops a person's intellect is akin to believing playing basketball makes people taller.

I have criticized Mig in the past for his (understandable) bias in Kaspy's favor. But I'll say it once again: their relationship and relative playing strenghts are un-adulterated proof that a great chess mind is not necessarily accompanied by a great intellect. Mig is miles ahead of Kaspy - and most GM's - in the 'intellect deparment', while Kaspy is miles ahead of Mig in the 'chess department'.

Kaspy is a truly stupid individual with an undeniable gift for the game. Much like Fischer, Petrosian and countless other chessplayers. On the other hand, I have met quite a few very smart, successful people who couldn't improve their game beyond the 2000 level, including (believe it or not) a then 30-something Harvard math professor who used to play at McDonald's Park in Forest Hills, NY about a decade ago (his name escapes me right now).

I think Irv is confusing two different points here.

He rightly says that being a very good chess player tells us nothing about other skills that people may possess. Similarly, being very good at mathematics (as in being a Harvard maths professor) tells us nothing about whether that person has good social skills or would make a good politician. In fact, specialisation makes the possession of other skills even less likely (a mathematician spends most of their time on maths, just as a world class chess player spends most of their time on chess). Of course, not all first class chess players are idiots savant.

However, Irv seems to be saying that transference of skills does not occur. So learning math would only be mentally good for maths; learning languages only makes one better at that language; and learning chess only makes one a better chess player. The jury is out on that one (see Mig's comments above), but generally western education is based on the belief in the transferability of skills to some extent. Reading a good book is meant to do more than make one good at reading books. So learning a skill that requires some mathematical work and space perception as in learning chess is not going to harm children (we hope) and may be useful in brain development.

making chess compulsory makes little sense. We have real big problems there with kids not making enough active sports.

utter crap

Irv says "Believing chess develops a person's intellect is akin to believing playing basketball makes people taller"

I beleive that this analogy is flawed. It's more like "believing chess develops a person's intellect is akin to beleiving playing basketball makes people have a better stamina"

Chess does develop stamina and focus and for the little kids some sort of logical thinking as well since during the game or study the kid operates in algorithmic ways with "if"s "then"s and "or"s. Composition solving is a mental chalenge rewarded with profound esthetic satisfaction similar in ways to solving beautiful mathematical problem.

I'm changing the subject here to say - and I hope a certain other blogger is reading this - that I believe that Maurice Ashley (and J.S.) is doing a very good job this year as commentator for the U.S Championship. I say this because I had less than laudatory words for Maurice last year. This year, the commentary seems less pop. I should also say that his interviews with the players have been funny and probing without being discourteous. Kudos to Maurice. Looking forward to the finals.

I agree about Maurice but NOT about Jen. She is quite terrible.

>Kaspy is a truly stupid individual with an undeniable gift for the game.

Have you ever met Kasparov, Irv?!

Or, for that matter, any 'truly stupid individuals'? I've done both, and I can assure you there's a marked difference.

jcm

Ivanchuk gave a long interview to a Ukrainian newspaper last week. One highlight is what he learned from Karpov and Kasparov:

"I recall Karpov getting extremely angry with me when I was his partner in Belote, and I made some mistakes. (Laughs) He was beside himself with anger, which really amazed me: I was playing for fun and didn’t treat the game so seriously. In general, I learned a lot from them – both in the art of chess, and behaviour. At that time, as a 17-year-old, I was sure that someone who was able to play chess well must, a priori, be a wonderful person who’s positive in every way. And conversely – if someone had negative qualities then he’d never be able to play chess well. Well, Karpov disabused me of that idea, making it very clear that those are absolutely different things, that personal and professional qualities have nothing in common. While from Kasparov I learned, in moments of stress, to allow myself quickly to explode and then calm down just as quickly i.e. that quality which is absolutely inherent to him. It’s important in particularly stressful periods not to keep your emotions inside."

More here (the translation of the rest should be ready tomorrow!): http://bit.ly/eSK0WJ

omg that was fantastic! You truly make my mouth water with good work like that! Maybe one day Ivanchuk will be convinced to do a best games book... maybe you could translate it?:) I'd be your first and favorite customer!! Ahh Ivanchuk my favorite of all players.

Just a though/question on a social/psychological angle to chess. It seems to me chess allows people who are otherwise honest and principled to practice trickery in acceptable and "dignified" way. The silent plotting on the board allows that person moments of "unethical" behavior. In that sense, chess may be promoting qualities that are not quite human.
I am not sure about this myself; I am just posing it as a question.
Also, the mandatory aspect of chess in schools perhaps smacks of a mild totalitarian proclivity.
Hi to all.
And so nice to have Mig back.

"More time spent on each question at high school, better the future college GPA ?" Seems strange, no ? :)

If the goal is to teach patience and focus, then there are better ways of doing that. Just give more school work - math problems, essays, what not. No need to learn chess for that.

"Aivazian said the lessons which start later this year would foster schoolchildren's intellectual development and teach them to think flexibly and wisely."

I wish it were that easy...

Chess is good in developing the mental judgement especially for kids. The board game is like an actual sport in schools here in the Philippines.

It mentions Aronian and that Armenia won the Olympiad in 2006 and 2008, which seems pretty superpowerish to me.
